One Hit Wonders

Tuesday was National One-Hit Wonders Day. As I am certain you have noticed, there is a National Day for just about everything. While One Hit-Wonders Day isn't as exciting as National Donut or Ice Cream Day, it is fun to stroll down memory lane to reacquaint ourselves with the many, very popular songs by artists who sadly only had momentary success. For me, it's very easy to come up with my favorite..."Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley. It is not the most original pick since this song is considered by many to be the most successful one-hit wonder of all time. The reason I love the song isn't because it brings me right back to 1987 when I hear it. It's because all of these years later, the music and lyrics still never fail to get me moving.

I did not write this Blog so we can all start contemplating "What ever happened to....?" about Soft Cell ("Tainted Love"), Dexys Midnight Runners ("Come On Eileen") or the Baha Men ("Who Let The Dogs Out?"). I chose to write about one-hit wonders because I seriously think that we should each ask ourselves if we have become one.

One of my best friends just attended her 50th high school reunion. She said the best part about reconnecting with old friends so many years after graduation is that no one was asking each other "So, what do you do for a living?", "How many kids do you have?", "Where do you live?" or "What kind of car do you drive?" Instead, they were discussing how they spend their quality time. They swapped tips on the best restaurants to get a healthy meal, the most fun "senior sneakers" workouts in the area, and the inspiring hobbies that they have taken up in their newly found "free" time.

In my line of work, I often hear people say "I used to be on the track team, I just don't have time to fit running into my schedule anymore" and "I used to have time to cook healthy meals, now we grab fast food." I don't want you to be a one-hit wonder! Just because you had success once, doesn't mean you have peaked and are not capable of having any more top hits!

I am now teaching weekly Qi Gong Classes at the Jewish Community Center (Tuesday mornings at 9:30am). When I walked in there for the first time, I wasn't only impressed by the huge swimming pool and state-of-the-art fitness center, I was struck by the startling number of seniors that are regularly using the facilities and attending the fitness classes. The place is packed! It is so inspiring and encouraging to see so many people working so hard at living their best lives!

If you are among the already retired population, I hope that you have filled your life with delicious healthy meals, hobbies that you love, and a fitness routine that you truly enjoy. If you are a working person or a student, please don't wait until a point in your life when you think you will have more free time to fit kale and a treadmill into your life. The time to create another top ten hit is now! If you need help doing so, I am just a phone call, text or email away. Let's make a top single that people will be talking about 30 years from now!
