Several international summits are now in our collective rear-view mirrors. There is no shortage of people offering their analysis of the progress that was made when the world leaders met behind closed-doors. I am not one of those people. My biggest take-away was when I heard the various country presidents referred to as "master disruptors." I realized that you do not have to wreak havoc on an international stage in order to bring disruption to the balance in your own life.
Have you made a commitment to "eat clean", yet you still shop aisles 6 and 7 (the junk food!) of the grocery store?
Did you plunk down a chunk of money to a weight-loss program or gym, but you make every excuse in the book for not showing up for workouts and weigh-ins?
Are the fruits and vegetables in your fridge turning into science experiments while you are sitting on the couch with a spoon and your two best friends Ben & Jerry?
How about your house? Was this the year you were going to finally declutter, yet there are still closet doors that cannot be opened for fear of an avalanche?
If you said YES to any of these questions, then you too may be a MASTER DISRUPTOR!
Most of us don't have cabinet-level staff that can debrief us after the summit, help up manage the firestorm we created, and write the script for the press conference announcing that we misspoke. So we need to make a decision that we are not going to tamper or meddle with our intentions to make positive changes in our lives. Self-sabotage, whether it is deliberate or not, will be a master disruption in your plans to live a healthier life.
Isn't it wonderful when you are able to watch your favorite movie or television show without commercial interruption? That is the very reason I switched to satellite radio...more music, less marketing. We should apply that same principle to other aspects of our lives.
When you fill your refrigerator and pantry with fresh food, keep those colorful fruits and vegetables front and center so every time you open the door and the light comes on, the strawberries will be reaching out to you without commercial interruption from the cookie dough.
The next time you turn on the television, use the commercial breaks as a positive disruption and do some push-ups or planks.
Set a timer for 15 minutes and dump that ubiquitous junk drawer on the floor and throw out anything you no longer need, want or love that is disrupting your life every time you open that drawer.
So as we are seeing things we never saw before with world leaders shaking hands and sitting face-to-face with one another, you too can step off of your own 'Air Force One' into unknown territory. Make today the first day of your personal healthy living summit. And remember, your greatest ally in the negotiating process is yourself!
